Definition & Challenge

Few challenges in life are greater than bringing the pieces of two broken families together. Different backgrounds and experiences, multiple issues, past hurts, high hopes and pre-existing relationships join together and usually produce confusion and pain.
You may be in a Stepfamily System and not even know it.

• Are you divorced with children and your ex-spouse is remarried?
• Are you remarried and one or both of you have children (in or out of the home)?
• Does your spouse have children (any age counts), and you don't?
• Do you have grandchildren from an adult child who is divorced, remarried, or whose ex-spouse is remarried?
• Do you have a family member in any of the above situations?

If you answered "yes" to the questions above, you are in a Stepfamily System.

Knowing what to expect and what is normal for a stepfamily can reduce the pressure of unrealistic expectations. Understanding the territory and the skills required to negotiate the journey facilitates the new family's development and promotes more lasting success.
