"Remarriage Preparation: Helping Couples Beat the Odds" (308)
August 3 (Tuesday) 3:15 pm - 4:45 pm
Predictable hot issues that cause stepfamily crisis are: stepparenting, the couple relationship, and finances. First marriages are “apples,” second marriages are “oranges.” Counseling stepcouples from the wrong paradigm will create more problems. Learn easy-to-use tools to identify the crisis, provide the right information, calm the crisis, and normalize their relationship development.
Learning Objectives. The participants will:
1. Understand parenting in the stepfamily.
2. Understand how the stepcouple relationship develops and functions.
3. Recognize different stepcouple financial models.
4. Increase your competence to handle stepfamily crisis.
"Stepfamily 911: Crisis Intervention for Stepcouples" (508)
August 4 (Wednesday) 1:15 pm - 2:45 pm
Preparing couples for remarriage is very different. We will address the key adjustment areas; children, finances, living arrangements and ex-spouses. You will learn how to guide a couple through developing "non-negotiables" - practical items that don't get discussed when "in love."
Learning Objectives. The participants will:
1. Understand the importance of “non-negotiables.”
2. Understand the important principles for successful stepfamily development.
3. Discover ten (10) areas of “intimacy” to develop in a relationship and how to build trust.
4. Increase your ability to conduct re-marriage preparation workshops.
"Ministering to Stepfamilies in teh Local Church - Best Practices" (908)
August 5 (Thursday) 3:15 pm - 4:45 pm
Many churches struggle to have successful marriage ministries because they latch on to and try to incorporate what others are doing without really understanding who they are as a congregation first. This workshop is not another cookie cutter program to add to the church calendar, but rather a process of discovery that allows churches to grow (or realign) a marriage ministry that is unique for your specific congregation and context.
Learning Objectives. The participants will:
1. Learn why many churches struggle to have a viable marriage ministry
2. Understand marriage ministry as missional to a congregation’s makeup, and why churches must reclaim a holistic approach to marriage ministry
3. Outline the process of discovering what makes your congregation unique when it comes to marriage ministry, and how to begin building from the foundation that makes your church and your context distinct
4. Learn how to assess your church’s “voice” of marriage—discover what you think you are saying, and what you really are saying about marriage to your congregation and your community
5. Learn how to develop, choose, and utilize resources to help you move from where you are to where you want to be in having a vibrant, proactive marriage ministry that is part of the DNA of who you are as a body of believers
6. Understand that, if done right, a powerful marriage ministry will compliment, co-exist with, and interrelate with your church’s entire ministry matrix rather than existing solely as a separate ministry track.
